INTERKULTFEST 2016 – PROGRAMME

INTERKULTacts: ArabQueen

HEIMATHAFEN NEUKÖLLN, GERMANY
TUE 20.9.2016 at 7 pm, STOA THEATRE HALL
WED 21.9.2016 at 7 pm,STOA THEATRE HALL

Mariam has grown up in a strict Muslim household. Now a young woman of marriageable age, her parents want to protect her from the dangers and temptations lying in wait for her beyond the confines of the protected family space. But her parents are unaware that Mariam is leading a double life. At home, she is the obedient daughter, on the street the self-confident ArabQueen. Through lies she surreptitiously obtains small freedoms in order to chat with strange men at the house of her liberal aunt Hayat, to meet her German girlfriend Lena, or to go to the disco. Like every teenage girl, Mariam tests the limits of the world in which she lives by circumventing the rules. But very quickly she comes up against the final limit: she must make a decision that will determine the course of the rest of her life.

Güner Yasemin Balci’s novel ArabQueen is based on the true story of a young woman who, like many Muslim women in Germany, has to cope with a constant tightrope act: between tradition and modernity, between the demands of religion and of Western society, between family obligation and personal freedom.
